5 Ways To Improve Your Relationship With Your Children

Parenting is the most important job that you will ever have and you should treat it as such. Being a businesswoman alongside your mummy duties may add to the difficulty. So having a good relationship with your child helps. Here are 5 ways to improve your relationship with your children, which I believe will strengthen your parent-child bond.
Do Not Act Hastily
As a parent, you are the one who is responsible for making the guidelines that your children should follow. This includes chores, homework, casual time, social interaction and this list goes on. Your approach will be steered by the age and sometimes sex of your child. When your child misbehaves and you believe that they should be punished, do so with care and love. It may not be easy when you are seeing red and your blood is boiling but you should not rush into action. It’s advisable to give them a timeout while you gather yourself and then decide your next action. After you have calmed down, you may even decide that the timeout is enough punishment.
Apologize to Your Children
Another way to improve your relationship with your children is to apologise when you are in the wrong. There are times when parents seem to forget that their children are people as well. Children have their own thoughts, feelings, dreams and motivations. Keep this in mind and be aware of how you would feel if you were in their shoes. If you made a wrong decision or yelled at your child, then you should apologise to them. Many parents are afraid that if they admit that they are wrong, then their children will lose respect for them. This is not true and it may actually have the effect of teaching your children wrong morals. Worse still is that it could end up driving them away. Therefore, if you are in the wrong, then let your child know it. You are the one who will teach them what is acceptable behaviour in relationships.
Let Them Know You Love Them
Telling your kids that you love them is easy to do when they make you proud or happy. You should ensure that your kids know that they are loved even during any period when your relationship may be strained. This may be a time when they are not in a good place. You should be there for them with kind words and actions. Let them know that you are hurt as well. Always end the day with hugs, kisses, words of love and comfort to put them at ease. This is a great way to improve your relationship with your child or children.
Be Patient
Your children will test you in many ways. When it comes to chores, they may slack off or produce a poor effort. Regardless of how many times you have instructed them in what to do, you must not do it yourself. This will set a bad precedent. You are teaching them skills that they will need when they are on their own, so they can become more responsible. Make an effort to be calm and appreciative whether the task was done to your satisfaction or not. Always thank them for what they have already done and then give any further instructions for completing the task. Explain why you are directing them to do anything else. This will help them to understand the process and understand the importance of their actions. The way you approach situations like these are good lessons for them, which will be carried over into other areas of their life.
Always Make Time For Fun
You do not have to plan a trip to an expensive resort to have fun with your children. You should make time to play with them regardless of how old they are. Playing with your children is a great way to improve your relationship with your son and daughter. It’s really important for developing their social skills as well as their mental and physical capabilities. Games with smaller children will require more physical activity. However, you should also try to play physically with your adolescents. With younger children, you may want to focus on things to stimulate their mental development. Games that test your knowledge are great for playing with teens. Some other enjoyable activities to engage in with your teens include tag, water-related fun or even hopscotch. Get the camera out and capture these events. The pictures or videos will someday be enjoyed, even if it’s a bit embarrassing for your teenager at the time.
